If you are not familiar with DVDStyler, it is/was a great tool for creating your own DVDs. It allows you to add videos, create titles, use themes, custom buttons, and more. But I say is/was because it is still around, but was working great before, and does not appear to work right anymore. You can download and read up on DVDStyler here:
I’ve used this software numerous times in the past, and it worked great. That said, something must have changed on my system, because it no longer works great at all. Every time that I try to drag a video file into the ’tileset’ bar, to add it as a chapter or new title, the program crashes. I tried using the add button instead, but it does the same thing. I even loaded it up in the terminal so I could track down the issue, but the only error it gives to standard out is this:
malloc(): invalid size (unsorted)
Aborted (core dumped)
Which wasn’t very helpful. I tried making sure I had the latest copy, I tried downgrading, but none of that worked. I changed the video format (even though the one I was using was supported) to no avail.
Finally, I figured out what was causing the problem, and came up with a less than awesome work around. I figured out, through trial and error, that the themes don’t work. If you choose a theme, and then add your video, it causes some sort of issue that ends up crashing the program.
So, a lame work around, but helpful one, is to choose “no theme” button when you first launch the program. This gives you a blank slate, to which you will have to add all your own buttons and text to the menu. A bit tedious, but I thought I’d mention it for the next person who was searching the entire world wide web trying to figure out why DVDStyler kept crashing on them.
Linux – keep it simple.
