About the author

Just a simple guy who lives in Alaska that happens to like tinkering. My main hobbies are reading the Bible, working with Linux, and playing with Android. I hope that this site will be useful to others, but most of the work on this site is for my own reference. Feel free to use any of the materials that you find here.

Below you will find my take on these three topics:

What is the Bible?
What is Linux?
What is Android?
What is HAM Radio?

What is the Bible?

The Bible is the most important book in the world. The Bible is also one of the most controversial books in the world. I believe that the Bible is God’s message to us. In his book he tells us several important things:

#1. God made the Earth and everything in it.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

#2. Because God created everything, he made a set of rules to govern us by: the ten commandments.

“Thou shalt have none other gods before me.” – Ever worshiped something more than God?
“Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:” – Ever have something that you cared about more than your creator?
“Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold [him] guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” – Ever use God’s name as a cussword?
“Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.” – Do you set asside time for the Holy God?
“Honour thy father and thy mother…” – Do you honor your parents?
“Thou shalt not kill.” – Ever kill anybody?
“Neither shalt thou commit adultery.” – Ever commit adultery?
“Neither shalt thou steal.” – Ever steal anything?
“Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.” – Have you ever told a lie?
“Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour’s.” – Have you ever struggled with contentment and covetousness? (Deuteronomy 5)

#3. Because he is a Holy, Righteous God, he cannot have sin in his presence. Just like light and darkness cannot exist in the same space.

“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (I John 1:5)

#4. I have a problem. I am incapable of keeping his law, and the punishment for breaking his law is eternal death.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3: 23)
“For the wages of sin is death;” (Romans 6:23a)

#5. Fortunately, God created a solution:

God has a gift of eternal life for us:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b)
Even though we were sinners, Christ (Jesus) died in our place!
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
If we believe in our hearts that Jesus died in our place, and that God raised him from the dead, and confess that (say it) with our mouth, we can be saved from that punishment of eternal death.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
He says that if we call on him, we will be saved!
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” (Romans 8:11)

There are no hocus-pocus magic words. It’s not a recital of a prayer. It is the believing and confessing that saved me, and he can save you too. Just pray to him, tell him how you know that you broke his law, and that you know he died on the cross in your place, and that you believe God raised him again. Ask him to quicken you (make you alive in him), and help you to walk with him. If you do this earnestly, he will hear you.

What is Linux?

Technically, Linux is not an operating system. Linux is the kernel that runs dozens of operating systems in billions of devices, operating systems like Android, Ubuntu, Fedora, RedHat, Suse, Yellow Dog, and many others, as well as devices like routers, cell phones, computers, “smart” microwaves, and other household and corporate devices.

While that technically is true, when most people say Linux, what they really mean is GNU/Linux, like Ubuntu, or Mepis, or Arch Linux. These operating systems are open source operating systems. That means that you can personally review all of the code that makes them work and check to see for yourself that they are not trying to spy on you, or steal your data, or have “hidden” back doors. Open source software is also able to be changed by others to make it better. A lot of hobbyists and professionals alike work on open source software (and hardware) in an effort to make it more efficient and useful. Much like the way that I edit the Linux kernels of my cell phones to allow them to have extra functions, like voltage control for better battery life, or different governors and i/o schedulers for better efficiency.

What is Android?

Android. A green robot that helps you do stuff, particularly with your cell phone, but now also with microwaves, household items, tablets, computers, kiosks and more. Android is an operating system that uses a monolithic Linux kernel. Typically (but not always), Android OS uses a touch screen interface and allows you to run programs that are written in Java. The Android operating system itself is also open source. By itself Android is somewhat bland with limited features, but when you purchase an Android device, the manufacture of that device usually has applied their own (often proprietary) patches, upgrades, and features to give you the best user interface.

Recently, Android outpaced any other operating system as the most “online” operating system, becoming the most common internet surfing operating system in the world. With thousands upon thousands of developers world wide, there is no shortage of games, utilities, and other software available for this system, which is slowly becoming a larger and larger part of our electronic and computer world.

What is HAM Radio?

HAM radio, according to Wikipedia is: Amateur radio, also known as ham radio, is the use of radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radiosport, contesting, and emergency communication. The term “amateur” is used to specify “a duly authorised person interested in radioelectric practice with a purely personal aim and without pecuniary interest;”[1] (either direct monetary or other similar reward) and to differentiate it from commercial broadcasting, public safety (such as police and fire), or professional two-way radio services (such as maritime, aviation, taxis, etc.).

Linux – Keep it simple.
